The Vjosa is the undisputed crown jewel of Albanian rafting. It is also the last free-flowing wild river of its size in Europe — 270 kilometers from the mountains of Greece to the Adriatic Sea without a single dam. In 2023 it became the first Wild River National Park in Europe. There is nothing else like it on the continent.
The Vjosa near Permet offers a mix of gentle Class I floats and lively Class II-III rapids, making it perfect for both families and first-timers looking for an exciting yet safe adventure in spectacular wild-valley scenery. The Osumi River carves its way through a 26-kilometer limestone canyon in southern Albania. The canyon walls rise as high as 80 meters above the water, and the river has been working on this gorge for more than three million years. For drama and scenery, no other Albanian river comes close.
The Osumi runs hardest in late April and May, when the rapids hit Class II-III and the canyon walls are filled with wildflowers. By July and August the water levels drop and the river becomes calm. The Osumi is shorter than the Vjosa as a season, but for sheer canyon scenery it is unbeatable.
Permet is the small mountain town that serves as our base of operations. It sits on the banks of the Vjosa, 90 minutes from Gjirokastra (a UNESCO World Heritage city) and three hours from Tirana. The whole area is shaped around the river — there are hot springs, traditional stone villages, and some of the best food in southern Albania. Çorovodë is the small town at the start of the Osumi Canyon. It is not a tourist destination in itself, but it is where rafting trips on the Osumi launch and where many guests have lunch after the trip. From Çorovodë you can also hike to the Pirogoshi Cave, one of the longest cave systems in Albania, or visit the village of Tomorr for views over the whole region.
The Bistrica is a short, calm river near Saranda on the Albanian Riviera. It is not a whitewater destination — the rapids are Class I and the route is more of a scenic float than a thrill ride — but it is a pleasant half-day activity if you are already on the coast and want to combine some river time with your beach holiday. We do not currently operate on the Bistrica; it is run by a small Saranda-based operator.
Most travelers do not have time to raft every river, so here is our honest recommendation. If you have one day, go to the Vjosa from Permet — it has the best balance of accessibility, scenery, and reliable water. If you have two days and want maximum variety, do one day on the Vjosa and one day in the Osumi Canyon. If you specifically want the most dramatic photos, the Osumi wins. Three rivers are commercially run for rafting in Albania: the Vjosa (the most popular), the Osumi (most dramatic canyon), and to a smaller extent the Bistrica near Saranda. The Vjosa and Osumi see by far the most rafting traffic and are the only rivers we operate on.
The Osumi Canyon delivers Class II-III through May, while the Vjosa near Permet offers gentle Class I-II water ideal for beginners. For the biggest reliable flows, come in late April or May when snowmelt is feeding the rivers.
