Paddle through 270 kilometers of untamed wilderness, dramatic gorges, and crystal-clear waters on one of Europe's most extraordinary rivers.
Book Your Adventure NowThe Vjosa is not just another European river — it is the continent's last great wild river, flowing 270 kilometers from the mountains of Greece through southern Albania to the Adriatic Sea without a single dam or barrier. In 2023, the Albanian government declared the entire Vjosa watershed a National Park, the first Wild River National Park in Europe. This means you are rafting through a protected wilderness that looks and feels exactly as nature intended.
The river carves its way through deep limestone gorges, past pebble beaches, and alongside forests of oak and Mediterranean pine. The water is remarkably clear — you can see the riverbed even in sections several meters deep. Eagles soar above the canyon walls, and the only sounds are the rush of water and your paddle cutting through the current. For anyone who loves raw, unspoiled nature, Vjosa River rafting is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that rivals the best rivers on any continent.
Difficulty: Class I-II (Beginner Friendly)
The gentle upper section near Permet is perfect for families and first-time rafters. Float through wide valleys with views of snow-capped mountains, passing traditional stone villages perched on hillsides. The rapids here are mild and fun without being intimidating, making it an ideal introduction to the sport.
Difficulty: Class II-III (Intermediate)
This is our most popular route. The river enters the spectacular Kelcyre Gorge, where towering cliffs rise hundreds of meters on both sides. The rapids increase in intensity, offering genuine thrills while remaining manageable for anyone with basic fitness. The scenery through the gorge is absolutely unforgettable.
Difficulty: Class III-IV (Advanced)
For experienced rafters seeking adrenaline, the Tepelene section delivers powerful rapids, tight turns, and genuine whitewater challenges. This stretch requires confidence in the water and good physical fitness. The reward is some of the most exhilarating rafting in the entire Mediterranean region.
April through October. Spring offers higher water and bigger rapids. Summer is warm and ideal for beginners. Autumn brings beautiful colors and fewer crowds.
We meet in Permet, and from there our local shuttle takes you to the launch point on the river and back. Permet is about 1 hour from Gjirokastra and an easy drive from the south — many guests combine rafting with a stay in the Vjosa valley.
Swimwear, water shoes or secure sandals, sunscreen, towel, and a change of clothes. We provide everything else including waterproof phone bags.
This is the question we hear most, and the honest answer is that Vjosa rafting is both genuinely exciting and genuinely beginner-friendly — as long as you go with a licensed operator. The vast majority of our guests have never sat in a raft before. The main sections we run near Permet are graded Class II–III: lively enough to get everyone paddling and laughing, but far from the extreme whitewater you might be picturing. Families with children from around age 8 join these trips regularly and love them.
Safety underpins everything we do. Every guest wears a properly fitted life jacket and helmet, every raft carries a certified guide trained in swift-water rescue and first aid, and a safety kayak shadows the group on the livelier sections. Before anyone touches fast water, we run a full briefing on land and a short practice on calm water so you learn the paddle commands and feel confident. You do not need to be a strong swimmer — just comfortable around water. In eight seasons and thousands of guests, safety has always come first, and it always will.
If you want the maximum thrill, come in spring, when snowmelt raises the water and the rapids get punchier. If you want a relaxed, sunny introduction, come in summer, when the river is calmer and warmer. Either way, your guide reads the group and the river and adjusts the day to suit you.
Plenty of countries offer rafting, so why travel to Albania for it? Because the Vjosa is unlike almost any river left in Europe. Most European rivers have been dammed, channelled, and tamed. The Vjosa still runs completely free — over 270 kilometres from the mountains of Greece to the Adriatic without a single barrier — which is exactly why it was declared Europe's first Wild River National Park. Rafting here, you feel that wildness: gravel islands the river reshapes every year, side streams arriving clear and cold, and long stretches where there is no road, no building, and no sound but the water.
There is also the value. A full rafting experience on the Vjosa costs a fraction of what you would pay in the Alps or in Western Europe, without any compromise on guiding standards or safety equipment. And because Albania is still an emerging destination, the river is uncrowded — often you will have a gorge entirely to yourselves. Wild water, world-class scenery, honest prices, and space to breathe: that combination is genuinely hard to find anywhere else on the continent.

There is no complicated online checkout — just a direct conversation with the people who will actually be on the river with you. We recommend booking a little ahead during the busy summer months (July and August) to be sure of your spot.
Half-day trips are €40 per person, all-inclusive, and larger groups pay a little less each. If you are planning a trip with friends, family, or colleagues, we also run group rafting options, and if you are basing yourself nearby, see our guides to rafting from Gjirokaster or the Albanian Riviera. You can also turn the day into something special by adding the nearby Benja thermal springs.
